The Grand Illusion: Interpretations of 19th century Orientalism in American Art and Beyond

The Midwest Museum of American Art is pleased to present the spotlight exhibit, The Grand Illusion: Interpretations of 19th century Orientalism in American Art and Beyond. This exhibit continues through Sunday, July 25, 2021.

Orientalism is a 19th-century term and art movement describing the Western fascination with the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia. Through a host of period artwork and ephemera, this exhibit reflects the artistic practice of the Orientalists. It provides insight into their romanticized perceptions and demonstrates the fashioning of an aesthetic that became en vogue among a Western audience.
