An Introduction to Wood Carving
With guest instructor, Yuming “Griffin” Liu, design instructor from St. Mary’s
There is something deeply satisfying about transforming a simple block of wood into a functional, handcrafted object — and that is exactly what you will do in this hands-on two-session workshop. Whittle While You Work introduces participants to the timeless craft of wood carving, guiding learners of all ages and experience levels through the process of shaping, hollowing, and refining a beautiful wooden spoon from start to finish.
Using basswood and traditional hand tools, participants will explore the fundamentals of subtractive carving — learning how to read the grain of the wood, control their cuts with precision, and bring a functional form to life through patience and practice. Along the way, there is plenty of room for personal expression, as subtle choices in shape and design make each finished spoon uniquely your own.
Safety and material awareness are woven throughout the workshop, making this an accessible and welcoming experience for first-time carvers and seasoned crafters alike. Leave with a one-of-a-kind spoon — and maybe a new favorite hobby.
Our guest instructor, Yuming “Griffin” Liu, is a sculptor born and raised in China. He holds a BA from Kenyon College and an MFA in Sculpture at the University of Notre Dame, where he has taught for two years.
